Prince of Players, set in London in 1661, tells the tale of a male actor who’s an expert at female roles. Who is Carlisle Floyd, you ask? (Readers who are familiar with this national treasure will, I trust, tolerate my writing a few words about him so that others can make his acquaintance.) The 89-year-old is one of the most gifted and honored composers and librettists in America, and his Prince of Players will have its world premiere at the HGO in March 2016. From Mozart, Wagner and Carlisle Floyd to Puccini and Rodgers and Hammerstein, Houston Grand Opera has put together a promising 2015-2016 season, complete with rising stars, established vocalists and gifted performers.
